"Fridge House"
Nelson
Completed 2008
NZIA Nelson Marlborough Architecture Award 2009 (Small Project Architecture)
NZIA Peoples' Choice Award 2009

The brief called for a new house on a cold south facing valley floor section for a motivated couple with a collection of art and objects, with a budget as far below $100,000 as possible.
The resulting house is small, based around the module and construction sequence of prefabricated and prefinished bondor panels, which provided a highly insulated, efficient, if unusual domestic building material to the shell walls and roof. Built like a fridge, it functions quite differently providing a generous, warm and light filled place to live. The entire house is efficiently heated in winter by a single plug in heater, and constructed well beneath budget.
