Kaka Point House
Balclutha
Completed 2008

The Catlins south of Balclutha is one of New Zealand’s scenic gems and the opportunity to design a house at Kaka Point was one to die for.  Set high above the ocean, a “crows-nest “ pops up to capture the panoramic views.
This farmhouse, however, also responds to its southern climes and exposed location with a sense of protection from the elements within the mass of exposed concrete walls, mellowed by the warmth of wood.  Energy-wise it is self sufficient, employing solar power supplemented by bottled gas and wood fuel from the farm.
