McLean House
Lud Valley, Nelson

NZIA Local Award for Architecture 2002

NZIA Resene Colour Award

The rural location is beautiful, elevated, with valley views glimpsed through beech and kanuka and constant birdsong. The clients asked for an authentic New Zealand house, of wood, not large, but full of light and flowing to the outdoors.

At the point of arrival the house presents a closed face. On entering, though, the full space is immediately revealed, open and airy, with light flooding in from gable windows and extensive openings to verandahs along the sunny sides.. In contrast, bagged blockwork embraces the fireplace, providing anchorage and a sense of refuge.

Textured materials play on light in changing patterns - macrocarpa battens, corrugated zincalume and timber decking. A roofed garden room pushes right over the bank, like a tree house.
