|
| The clients sought a
house that settled comfortably into its surroundings
while dramatising the spectacular views overlooking
Nelson Harbour. They liked the relaxed forms of
American Eastern Seaboard architecture with its
maritime influences, weathered grey cedar and white
trim. |
|
| Building on these influences,
the design also reinterprets and expands the indigenous
seafront vernacular of simple gable ended buildings
directly addressing the water. The high roofs provide
a variety of volumes and allow the interior to be
naturally lit by roof lights and glazed gables,
protected from direct sun by louvred screens. |
|
| Construction details
in steel, timber and brass show a high level of
craftsmanship and enhance the maritime flavour.
Extensive decks and landscaped terraces provide
outdoor living areas and integrate the house with
its sloping site. |
